OMG, It's a Newsletter.
It's been a wild summer! I had my last day as a staff person at Girls Rock! Rhode Island a little over a month ago at the end of our second session of Girls Rock Camp (so many pics can be found here!). It's very bittersweet, of course. But, I am so excited for all that is to come for Girls Rock! RI and for my upcoming work, too!
On that note, in addition to teaching an Intro to Gender & Women's Studies course at the University of Rhode Island and recording a demo and playing our first few shows with Alpha Error, I have a number of projects going on, including a few big ones below:
Help Improve Music Gear Spaces!
I have created a survey to assess cis women, trans, and non-binary folks' experiences with and relationships to music gear to be used in future trainings and work to make positive change in music gear spaces. I will be collecting the data, analyzing it, and sharing out findings via trainings, my website, and social media this fall and winter. If you've taken it already, thanks so much for sharing your experiences to make change!
Please share with the cis women, trans, and non-binary musicians in your orbit!
Changing Our Tune Project
Girls Rock! Rhode Island recently received funding from the Women's Fund of RI to support its Changing Our Tune Project, which will bring Providence's music scene together to prevent gender-based violence. I am currently working with Girls Rock! RI to assess the climate in Providence's music community and to plan, and facilitate conversations between venue owners, staff, bands, and audiences. Through this work we will identify/establish shared expectations across venues, provide prevention trainings, and more.
I am super excited about this project and the potential to make serious change in these spaces and for the possibility to develop a model that could work in other cities, as well!

RAD TIPS!
LEVEL 5 BROZONE ALERT at your workplace? Hiring more ciswomen, queer, trans, non-binary folks or people of color might be an awesome goal... but it might not be the first step to lasting change. What if you hire someone and the BROZONE culture is still alive? How long do you realistically think these awesome new hires will last? NOT VERY LONG. When you hear folks talk about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the inclusion piece is key! If you don't have that, the other two won't happen and you'll be stranded in the BROZONE for eternity. If you want to spend your entire professional career in Mad Men, that's an option. But if you want to make real change, education of your current workforce (and most importantly: management!) is the first step on your journey to a happier, healthier, more diverse, more effective workplace (this extends to organizations and schools, as well!).
