The Gender and Music Gear Survey found that many individuals of all genders are making purchasing decisions based on a company’s treatment of women, trans, and non-binary individuals in their stores and online.
Across industries, future and current employees will choose to work in companies that share their values, as represented in marketing, hiring, policies, and culture (Metlife, 2017).
With more customers buying and researching online, customers have choices and want to support companies who share their values (Accenture, 2018).
Companies with more diverse management teams have 19 percent higher revenues due to innovation (BCG, 2018)
Skills and tips to create a more inclusive hiring process: recruitment and outreach, job descriptions, interviewing, selection, onboarding, and more
Skills and tips to create a more inclusive environment in your workplace or store, from customer interactions to its physical environment
Tools for more inclusive employee feedback, evaluation, and support
A process to audit your company’s marketing representation and tips to make it more inclusive
Increased knowledge of dynamics and basic language around diversity-related topics
Policy ideas and examples to make sure your company’s values are represented in your work
Over 5 weeks starting May 8th, 2023, participants will work through:
One course module per week, including short videos, readings, worksheets, and helpful handouts and tools.
Friday each week, I will provide a virtual “office hours” session to answer specific questions and allow participants to hear stories and experiences, successes and challenges from their classmates/colleagues. We’ll do check-ins on progress and provide ideas and support, specific to your store’s unique needs. This is optional, but past participants have found it highly valuable!
This course is for owners and managers of small businesses in the music product industry: retailers, manufacturers, etc.
Whether you are a new manager or a seasoned manager who never received training or could use a refresher on inclusive management practices, you should find plenty to help you grow in your role, supporting your employees and customers.
This course is not for companies who have already run many trainings on management or diversity topics as this content will be introductory. It also might not be the best fit for a very diverse staff who might not want to attend a diversity training run by a white woman (totally fair!).
This is also not for companies whose motivation is simply to increase sales or credibility (though that might happen). Unless ownership and management are on board with this type of training, it will not be effective. So, make sure that’s the case first! If you aren’t sure, reach out and I’ll help talk you through it!
The ultimate motivation for attending this training should be to create a more welcoming space because it’s the right thing to do— everyone should feel comfortable being a musician!

As a musician, myself, I understand the needs and concerns of musicians.
In my roles teaching, leading RIOT RI (formerly Girls Rock! Rhode Island), or working with companies in the industry like EarthQuaker Devices, I have years of experience helping both individuals and companies address these topics.
I want to meet you and your company where you are at. Many people are nervous to have conversations about gender and diversity issues because they are worried they will say the wrong thing. These might be new conversations for you and your workplace and both employees and customers might have a gap in their understanding of and experience with these topics. That is not uncommon, and I’ll help you address these issues head-on (hint: all of these conversations start with trust!).

Companies are consistently reaching out to me, asking for help. But, for many small businesses, it doesn’t make sense to hire me to work with their company 1:1. An online course is a more accessible option, with the bonus of connecting with like-minded folks in the industry.
And… after reading the responses and results from the Gender and Music Gear Experience Survey… after my many conversations with musicians on my podcast Mid-Riff, it’s clear there’s still a lot of work to do.
My hope is that the course will allow more companies like yours to get the support for inclusive management that will allow you to become a rolemodel and leader in the industry!
